Measuring grain angle in cylindrical wood pieces is now easy, quick and accurate with the Metriguard Model 512 Grain Angle Meter. The Model 512 is a simple, easy to use handheld device that can also accommodate tapered wood cylinders such as baseball bats and pool cues. The Model 512 Grain Angle Meter is particularly useful when evaluating diffuse-porous wood species such as maple and birch, where grain angle along the tangential face (flat-face) is difficult to determine visually.
The grain angle meter is aligned to the long axis of a cylinder with floating V-shaped guides on each end of the meter. Grain angle is measured by sampling the dielectric strength of an electric field in relation to the long axis of the cylinder. Grain angle, in degrees, is displayed on an LCD screen. Green, yellow and red LEDs indicate grade 1, grade 2 and fail for each piece tested, according to factory or customer pre-set criteria.
The Model 512 Grain Angle Meter is especially well-suited for the evaluation of wooden baseball bats. Grain angle can be measured at any stage of the manufacturing process, including square or round blanks, tapered cylinders or finished bats.
Major League Baseball has mandated the evaluation of grain angle in maple wood bats. The “ink dot test” is used to produce contrast to allow for visual and physical measurement of grain angle at a single spot above the handle on the tangential face of each bat. The Model 512, in contrast, is capable of quickly and accurately measuring grain angle along the entire length of the bat without subjective interpretation of the spread of a spot of ink.
Even objects that have been surface treated with stain or paint can be evaluated with the Model 512. Grain angle can be measured without disturbing the finish as may be needed for visual evaluation methods. Some paints can cause erratic readings and should be tested for suitability.
